Rohit Bal, one of the most celebrated fashion designers in India, was cremated in Delhi on Saturday. Bal, 63, died on Friday following a heart attack.
His body was taken for cremation from his residence in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon. Videos from the Lodhi Road Crematorium showed a heavy crowd waiting to say their final goodbyes to the renowned designer.
Rohit Bal’s brother conducted the funeral rituals.
Fashion designers Rohit Gandhi and Varun Bahl, and actor and model Arjun Rampal were in attendance to pay farewell to Bahl.
Former Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani also paid her final respects to the designer.
A prayer meeting in memory of Rohit Bal will be held on Monday, November 4, at 4 pm at Sai International Centre in New Delhi.
The tributes had started to pour in after the news about Rohit Bal’s death first broke. The fashion fraternity mourned the loss of “Gudda”- a name Bal was lovingly called.
Rohit Bal, who hailed from Kashmir, was known for his flamboyant and rich designs and boasted several top Bollywood celebrities as his clientele. His design has been worn by international celebrities like Pamela Anderson, Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell.
The Fashion Design Council of India, of which Bal was a founding member, condoled his death.
“We mourn the passing of legendary designer Rohit Bal. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion and inspired generations”, the FDCI wrote on Instagram, along with a picture of the fashion icon.
“His legacy of artistry, and innovation along with forward-thinking will live on in the fashion world. Rest in peace GUDDA”, the council added.
